Ali Raza studied at the National College of Arts, Lahore (BFA, 1992) and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (MFA, 2001). As an artist, Ali works in different media including Drawing and Painting, mixed media, printing making, digital image making, and 3D. He has participated in several national and international exhibitions. As an academic, he has extensive experience teaching art at several universities in Pakistan and the USA, including the National College of Arts, Lahore; University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Appalachian State University, Boone; Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond; Virginia State University, Petersburg; and Brightpoint College, Midlothian.
After returning to Lahore in 2016, he worked as the Head of MA Art & Design Studies at SVAD, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. In 2022, Ali joined the Lahore School of Economics as a Professor of Visual Studies at the Department of Media Studies, Art, and Design.
